When I first decided to start a podcast, I realized I was going to need to find a podcast host- a website that would allow me to upload my episodes and distribute them to the various podcast platforms that people use to listen to their favorite shows. I came across Buzzsprout, which is consistently one of the best podcast hosts out there! They allow me to easily upload my shows and provide me with detailed analytics about the show on a daily basis. One thing that I also appreciate is the yearly summaries they give me about my show. Yesterday, I received information about what my top 5 shows were last year so I thought I would break them down with a bit more detail here!
#5: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Did you know that the TMNT first started as a line of toys and eventually evolved into the cartoons and live-action films that we all knew and loved in the 80s and 90s? Well guess what?! They did! The turtles were created late one night by two artists named Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman who were living in North Hampton, Massachusetts. They wanted to start a new comic based about a group of samurai turtles. It first started off as sort of a joke, but ultimately it was genius! You can listen to this episode here: TMNT Episode
#4: Popular Toys & Cartoon Bears of the 1980s: We were certainly obsessed with Bears in the 80s (and 90s I might add!)! From the Gummi Bears to Teddy Ruxpin and many others in between, we just couldn't get enough! You can learn more about the backstory of America's love affair with Bears here: Bears of the 80s!
#3: 'Tween Shows of Nickelodeon from the 90s!: The 1990s were truly the heyday for quality 'tween programming on Nickelodeon. We had shows like "Hey Dude," "Salute Your Shorts" and "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" In this episode we take a deep dive into the backstory behind some of these cult favorite TV shows. And let's be honest, today's shows on Nickelodeon, pale in comparison to the 90s! You can listen here: Nickelodeon 'Tween shows of the 90s!
#2: Fiona Apple: Although this episode was a bit slow to gain momentum, as the year carried on, listeners of the podcast were really interested in Fiona Apple's story. Fiona Apple is arguably, one of the most talented singer and songwriters of our generation (Gen X/Elder Millennials). Her sound is uniquely her own and her lyrics are profound, and that's putting it lightly. Despite some personal life struggles, she is truly a creative genius. You can listen to that show, here: Fiona Apple
And now, drum roll please......
#1: Bizarre Toys & Collectibles of the 1980s & 1990s: Who knew that the creator of the Beanie Babies had an anger management problem? Who knew that the creator of the Troll Dolls started by carving toys for his daughter because the family could not afford Christmas presents? You can learn all about this and more on my most popular episode of 2022! You can find that here: Bizarre Toys & Collectibles of the 80s and 90s!
